Preparing for Labour and Delivery using Hypnotherapy
HISTORY & CURRENT RESEARCH
The use of hypnosis for more comfortable childbirth has a long and distinguished history.
First documented in 1920’s in Russia, Doctor Platanov was well known for his hypno-obstetric success. Ferdinand Lamaze learned his hypnotic techniques during a visit to Russia. He developed his techniques from using some of Doctor Platanov’s methods.
In modern times, the British Journal of Anaesthesia, July 2007 carried out a comprehensive study.
Their conclusion included... “Teaching self-hypnosis facilitates patient autonomy and a sense of control. Secondly the majority of patients are likely to be able to use hypnosis for relaxation, thus reducing apprehension that in turn may reduce analgesic requirements. Finally the possible reduction in the need for pharmacological augmentation of labour when hypnosis is used for childbirth may minimise the incidence of uterine hyperstimulation and the need for epidural analgesia”
How Many Sessions?
You will need 5 sessions, scheduled one week apart between each appointment.
This will give you and your birth-partner plenty of time to :
1. learn self-hypnosis,
2. discuss and discharge any fears or concerns,
3. achieve maximum depth in hypnosis,
4. learn ‘partial hypno-anaesthesia’ techniques
5. prepare for unexpected situations during labour/childbirth.
6. discuss any relevant issues
When should you start?
· If you are experiencing your first pregnancy— make your first appointment at about week 30.
· Expecting twins/triplets/multiple birth? - your first appointment should be at around 25 weeks.
· Second/third pregnancy? Come in at week 28.
What Happens?
SESSION 1— Discuss and set up your hypno plan to prepare for the birth you want to have. Learn Partial Hypno-anaesthesia & get rid of your fears about labour and childbirth. This session is recorded for you to take home and practice.
SESSION 2—Continue from the previous session. Learn how to increase hypno anaesthesia—the hypno epidural. Learn how to self-hypnotise. This session is recorded for you to take home and practice.
SESSION 3—Get rid of any leftover fears. Prepare for possible emergency situations; C-Sections, Spinals or Epidurals. This session is recorded for you to take home and practice.
SESSION 4— You practice total body hypno-anaesthesia again with the hypnotherapist—if you feel comfortable, and give your permission, your birth-partner/husband learns how to put you into and take you out of hypnosis (for the birth only). Partner has time to practice to support you AND also experiences hypnosis.
SESSION 5—With your birth partner continue to rehearse the process with the guidance of the hypnotherapist. Dispel any remaining fears or doubts.
AFTER BABY IS BORN...
Why not come in for hypnotherapy to help you get back to a fully functional and ‘normal’ (for you) life?
Hypnotherapy isn’t just for preparing for different situations—it can also be used to develop and maintain good habits.
Don’t forget to check in with your hypnotherapist to let him/her know how he/she can help you.
HOW MUCH WILL I INVEST IN THIS? Normally $750
